S4 E8 – Rotten sausages get rid of wrinkles?
Or maybe rotten tomatoes can be used as nail varnish remover… who knows? As well as separating the truth from the lies, Ben, Jamie and Mike chat about their favourite foods to cook at home vs. what’s the best cuisine to eat when you’re going out.
Best soundbite: “I’ve got an old cow out back!” – Mike Huttlestone

S4 E10 – Is MSG not actually bad for you?
There’s a load of negative stigma attached to the consumption of MSG (Monosodium Glutomate) which is a naturally occurring flavour enhancer that’s usually used in take-away foods. But what if we were to tell you it’s not actually bad for you? In this episode the guys delve into the subject and see if they can taste the difference between a normal dish and one where MSG has been added.
I’ve been getting into middle eastern flavours lately, Isreali is one I didn’t know much about until I bought a cookery book on and it really is amazing.
Further to the question on what cuisine is your favourite and the style of food you each generally cook in battles: if Mike is thai, Jamie is steak and chilli and Barry is avo and salmon (but let’s not put him in a box) and you had to cook/eat each others food style for a month, whose would you pick and why?
You know what would be interesting? A “make/improve my recipe” video/challenge. I have loads of recipes I’ve created and tweaked over time but they’ve never been evaluated by anyone close to a professional chef. I wouldn’t be curious to see how much a professional chef could improve my recipes (I’m sure it would be a lot)!
Also like this game 🙂 Def Italian food. Italian food (with the best ingredients) = absolute comfort/feel good food!
Oh I’m definitely with Mike on this one. I’ve never encountered a Thai dish that I didn’t love – only Thai dishes that weren’t made well so that’s the fault of the chef, really. I’ve never tried cooking Thai food though so that’s something that needs to change.
On the subject of MSG, I’d love to hear a full podcast devoted to it. In the meantime, for anyone who is interested, AJ+ has an excellent video discussing the topic and one of the major reasons why it has such a bad rep.
It’s looking like episode 10 is gonna be on MSG, Mike had some really interesting points on it! And thanks – we’ll check it out!!
I went to La Tomatina, which is in Buñol, and afterwards I had to throw away all the clothes I wore because they smelt so bad. Also, along with the giant dump trucks of tomatoes they dump on the crowd, they also spray the huge fire truck hoses.
You guys should definitely try all the funny food fests, like the Cheese Rolling fest in Gloucestshire, the Fete du Citron in France, the Battle of the Oranges in Italy, or the wine throwing in La Rioja, Spain
Oh wow that sounds incredible – visiting a load of food festivals would be fab!
A video about msg would be very interesting! I avoid it on Doctor’s advice because of migraines, but I wasn’t aware it’s general bad rap was undeserved. Definitely something I’d be interested in hearing more about.
Def gonna make an episode on it, Mike has some really interesting thoughts!
One of the few times I knew the answer! I saw a fascinating medical documentary some years back where people who were suffering from various chronic nerve spasms, such as in the larynx, were treated with BTX, a precursor of Botox. Rotten sausages for the win!
Also, I want to thank you for helping embolden me to try cooking new cuisines; Sometimes wandering the spice aisle in the supermarket I would dream of what could be created but never had a starting point. Sure, the basics, garlic, oregano, sage were easy enough to comprehend, but garam masala? Cumin seeds? Harissa? Aaaah! Now, I can whip up a curry, make some passable pad thai, and ooooh, harissa prawns with tabboulah, yum yum yum. Big thanks to all the Sorted crew for teaching me to try new things and showing me the ‘proper’ way to chop an onion. You all rock!
Hahaa, weird where you can find this kinda info, right? And that’s so lovely to hear, glad you’re learning and exploring in the kitchen! Harissa prawns with tabbouleh sounds delish, do you have a recipe?
Yes, I have an excellent recipe, yours! https://youtu.be/B7IolaXMBOg
Last March I had some health issues that caused me to re-evaluate my life choices. I decided to abandon processed foods and take an “If i can’t pronounce it I won’t eat it” attitude. I am more of a visual learner and I quickly found that a Sorted recipe never failed (looking at you Tasty), so I came to rely almost exclusively on your content. Reliable, eminently entertaining and confidence building. I figured if Barry could make a flatbread, so could I! Since last March I have lost 203lbs just from scratch cooking, portion control, a proper exercise program, and of course Sorted! What you do does make a difference in peoples lives, and I thank you!
Botox, basically, when injected is a nerve block. Stopping muscles from sending signals to the brain to contract. hence why it smooths wrinkles.
It also has many medical therapy applications such a relief from migraines, TMJ (temporomandibular joint disorder) and those who have suffered strokes (helps to reduce muscle spasticity) plus many others therapies.
I thought everyone knew that botox was basically botulism. Maybe I’m just aware of it because I know people that have had it done.
Also I would love a podcast on MSG, it’s definitely a topic I don’t know a lot about, but would love to, cause it makes things taste so good!
Definitely gonna do an MSG episode, anything in particular you’d want to know?
Mostly just what it actually is, why people think it’s soo bad
I wonder though- what is a cuisine that you haven’t really experienced and want to? For me, it’s Ethiopian/Eritrean, but what is it for anyone else?
Also, a possible topic could be food deserts? I’ve been hearing more about it living in the United States, on the vein of food scarcity.
Oh my. I am speechless! This rotten sausages thing is a bit of a shock to me. Please do more games like this (true or lie). It’s very entertaining!
La Tomatina is fun. Wanted to go there for a long time. Now when I live in Spain, definitely will go one day 🙂
If you like SE Asian food and umami then you guys should definitely try authentic Lao food. Yummy!
I’m still unsure of what umami is exactly. And so msg is a good thing?
Umami is basically the fifth flavour profile behind salty, sweet, sour and bitter. A lot of people describe it as being a savoury taste!
I’ve been trying quite a bit of South American cuisine recently, as a few restaurants have opened up near me that do more than the usual “Mexican inspired” burritos. If you’re ever way up north (Edinburgh), give Topolabamba a try, they do the most incredible Mexican street food. It has all the amazing fresh flavours and beautiful acid/fat/salty deliciousness of Thai or Vietnamese, but is something a bit different.
