Lab tests, wearable tech and all sorts of other breakthroughs are making us all question and better the way we live our day to day lives. Are we moving toward a future where our DNA will have the main say in what food we tuck into? Are we close to that possible future?

    Food experiences that came to mind immediately were Christmas dinner & CNY celebrations. This is food that’s not cooked by top chefs, it’s cooked by family and friends who come to celebrate with you!
    Sometimes the food is maybe a little cold by the time you got to it, and sometimes it’s amazing and that dish is the one everyone goes back to for seconds – but the memory of the experience is created by the events and the company kept, despite your experience of just the food.

    As further examples, how many Sorted Member’s favourite dishes on their profiles are dishes their family makes or they’ve made for a loved one? The experience and nostalgia around that dish is what makes the dish their favourite!

    I think EVERY time you eat away from your usual environment, it’s a food experience, The factors that lead up to the food experience can also be part and parcel of that experience
    This could include – how the decision was made to eat at a certain venue,,
    How the booking was made and how the person doing the booking was treated
    The arrival at the venue, the seating.. the ambiance, the temperature (eh Ben)?) The service quality, food quality, lighting etc.. the list coudl go on.
    I think the major deciding factor of any dining experience is ‘How did this experience make you feel’ and the answer may have less bearing on the food than the experience.
    I was watching a Heston show the other day and all I could see was gimmicks. I thought that he’d jumped the shark and I have absolutely no yearning to visit his restaurant for that gimmick of wearing earphones whilst looking down at a box with sand underneath it.
    To me it’s more of the sum of everything and it varies all the time due to the reason for booking that meal.. the company etc..
    So it’s all relative really. BUT the one very important factor to make any dining experience wonderful is … good yummy food served with a smile.

      if I may, Annie, I think sometimes even a smile is an option for receiving good food. That episode of Seinfeld with the cranky chef but excellent soup comes to mind.

      I was reading an article regarding an Asian actress leaving tips to her 2 daughters for choosing good Asian restaurants, and she -very comically- mentioned if you go to a Chinese restaurant and see the servers smiling and asking you if the food was OK, she suggested we didn’t get the best authentic, delicious food you could get elsewhere.

      On a personal note, I once drove 2 hours to experience Peruvian food, as I was super nostalgic, didn’t eat my home food for years and got told this ‘hole in a wall’ restaurant was *THE* place to eat. The recommendation was right, the food was excellent, yet the servers were short tempered. My server even rolled her eyes at me for not being fast enough to decide what to eat. You see, where I come from, being fast thinking and assertive is not even a virtue; is an expectation (hence, me not living there anymore). It was hilariously amazing seeing people in other tables looking at each other smiling like saying “ah… we are home!”

      I’d go even further and say that every time we eat could be (or should be 😉 ) regarded as a food experience if we cared enough to pay attention to the experience part (where we are, how we are, who we are with) or the food part, for that matter. It sometimes feels like we need some grand experience to even look at it as an experience. Isn’t that strange? And yes, yummy food with nice people (if there are people involved) is usually a great enough food experience for me, too. 🙂

      All that said, I wouldn’t mind checking out a few of those grand experiences if I’m in the right mood.
